A member at Ridgemark recently asked me to describe a pre-swing routine to help with his club selection. This is the best method I know that is working for many golfers.
Imagine a four-foot square around your golf ball and imagine another four-foot square directly behind your ball. The box behind your ball is the “play box,” where you use your imagination to determine what shot and club you will use for your shot. The t box around your golf ball is the “work box” and is for hitting your shot.
The key to a good pre-swing routine is not to leave the first box until you have decided what you are going to do in the second box. The key to a successful shot is not to change your mind on your shot or club selection once you have entered the second box. Changing your mind in mid-swing usually ends with bad results.
Swing by Ridgemark and see one of our teaching staff for more help with your pre-swing routines.
Rules Question
When is your club considered grounded in long grass? The answer is at the bottom of the column.
Jason Sims turns pro
Ridgemark’s Jason Sims passed the first stage of becoming a PGA Golf Professional by passing his Player Ability Test at San Jose Muni Golf Course. Jason shot a 74 and 71 and shattered the target score by 10 strokes.
Jason will now begin the education process of three business schools to gain his PGA Membership.
It’s Raining Aces
There were two hole-in-ones at Ridgemark last week, with Mike Martinez scoring his second hole-in-one on the 190-yard 12th hole of the Gabilan Course at Ridgemark. Mike’s ace was witnessed by Bob Howell, Lloyd Kelly and Bart Racca.
Not to be outdone by Mike, Nellie Turner dropped in her tee shot on the 115-yard 17th hole of the Diablo Course. Nellie’s hole-in-one was witnessed by Wilma Bridge, Millie Sams and Margie Minogue.
Demo Day
On Saturday, May14, Ridgemark will be hosting a Demo Day to include Titleist, Ping, Power-Bilt and possibly Cobra. I will confirm all vendors in my next column.
Golf Quote
“It took me 17 years to get 3,000 hits in baseball. I did it in one afternoon on the golf course.”

Rules Answer
According to Rules Decision 18-2b/5, when the grass is compressed to the point where it will support the weight of your club, your club is grounded.
