Hollister resident and self-published author Gregory Garrett wants to inspire “thought and feeling” in people, and he plans to do it with his new book “The Alchemy of the Western Mind.”
“I want people to read this book and have a much more liberated consciousness about these issues,” he said.
The issues Garrett is talking about, which include human nature, if there is a God and if so, what its qualities are. The son of a sociology professor, Garrett said he’s hard-wired to think outside the box, and ponder some of life’s biggest questions like human existence. His book consists of 60 essays he’s been compiling for the past three years.
“My idea with this book is to address these topics with many theories so people can open their minds and develop their own ideas about them,” he said. “You know when a preacher talks, they give you one way of thinking about something, but in this book I give the reader the ideas of different philosophers like Darwin and Freud.”
The ideas of Charles Darwin and Sigmund Freud are in the book, and Garrett said although he doesn’t always agree with the two, it’s important for people to look at issues from different perspectives. He hopes people can gain insight by reading his work.
“A lot of the stuff I write is basically my own exploration as to why we’re here, how can we make life on Earth better, and where are we headed in the future,” he said.
Putting his thoughts on paper is one thing, but getting them out to the public is another. Garrett has struggled finding a publishing company, but was so adamant about sharing with others, he chose to publish the book himself.
“I never went into writing wanting to make any money,” he said. “All I want is to share my ideas with others, and inspire at least one other person to explore their ways of thinking.”
Garrett’s book can be found at the Wise Owl Bookstore in Gilroy.
