The local woman accused of embezzling from a cattle dog rescue group over a five-year stretch has accepted a plea deal and faces sentencing in May.
Idalia R. Borges is scheduled for sentencing at 9 a.m. May 8 at the San Benito County Courthouse, according to records.
As part of the plea deal, the county woman accepted one of the five grand theft charges against her. She faces a likely sentence of 90 days to 180 days in county jail and up to five years of probation, according to records. Her sentence would be in line with other recent embezzlement cases, including convictions for Ray Wood and Jason Lei, former law enforcement officers who stole from their respective unions.
In August 2013, the San Benito County District Attorney’s Office charged Borges on suspicion of stealing nearly $60,000 from the Australian Cattle Dog Rescue nonprofit organization. She was accused of five felony theft counts for each year – between 2007 and 2012 – in which police alleged separate charges that she stole from the organization.
The allegations came to light earlier this year. Hollister police conducted an investigation and submitted a report to the district attorney. Deputy District Attorney Patrick Palacios is handling the prosecution’s case, while Harry Damkar is the defense attorney.
