It is a national campaign to help curtail severe pet overpopulation problems. Hollister over the past year has been in the spotlight itself over its overpopulation of stray pit bulls and Chihuahuas. That local problem led to a controversial ordinance mandating spaying or neutering of the dog types in Hollister.

The other local organizations taking part Tuesday are the Animal Hospital of Hollister, Ausaymas Veterinary Clinic, The House Call Vet and the Hollister Veterinary Clinic, according to the announcement from the city.

The organizations are getting involved by offering spay and neuter certificates valued at $50 off any spay or neuter beginning Tuesday. Priority will be given, meanwhile, to owners of the pit bull and Chihuahua dogs. Certificates are limited as well.

To obtain a spay/neuter coupon, residents can stop by the animal shelter located at 1331 South St. starting Tuesday between noon and 5 p.m. or they can call (831) 636-4320 for information.
