“Love Letters” is a gentle delight with two people on stage reading letters to each other from the time they are children at a birthday party, continuing through their lives with a bond that brings closeness. The A.R. Gurney’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated, emotional, humorous and touching play draws profound feelings from the audience.
The story is woven within letters they send throughout the play, which create a story of the lives of two people. It examines where the relationship goes and how deeply they become involved while hardly meeting or seeing each other during nearly 60 years.
I shall leave the story to unfold for those that attend performances. I feel it is more enjoyable moving through their lives as a surprising journey.
The two characters—Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepiece Ladd lll— are played by six different cast members at different performances. All ticket sales are dedicated to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
Christine Wait and Kevin Heath were Melissa and Andrew the night I reviewed and they played beautifully and touched deeply. Other casts will include Ruth E. Stein, Lance LaShelle, Rosalind Farotte, Tom Hepner, Kae Jenny-Spencer, Steve Spencer, John Varela and Wait.
“Love Letters” should not be missed. It’s an experience that will stay with you.
