Sasha Talavera ferries her children Marria, 3, and Derek, 5, across the pool as they learn how to swim during recreational swim Tuesday at San Benito High School.

As the weather warms up, San Benito County families are cooling off at the San Benito High School pool through the Hollister Recreation department’s open swim hours.

The school pool is open to the public Tuesday through Friday, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., thought it is closed this Wednesday for the Fourth of July. Admission is $3 per person. Teens 15 and up and adults can swim laps Monday through Thursday, from 6 to 7 p.m.

Hollister recreation is also offering swim lessons, with the third session to run July 16 through July 26. Priority registration begins on July 11, from 8 a.m. to noon, with open registration July 12, from 1 to 5 p.m., at the Hollister Community Center, 300 West St. Lessons are available for children 3 to 13, and last 30 minutes a day, Monday through Thursday, for the two week sessions. The age groups include Tadpoles for 3-to-5-year-olds; Guppy for 5-to-7-year-olds; Blue Gill for 7-to-9-year-olds; Fish for intermediate and beginner 9-to-11-year-olds; and Stingray for advanced 11-to-13-year-olds.

A junior lifeguard program is also available for children 11 and up. They must be able to tread water for five minutes, swim four laps freestyle unassisted and be able to life a five-pound brick from the deep end of the pool.
