Editor,
I am showing my appreciation to your opinion story, “Don’t Cheapen SBHS Diplomas.” For me, a junior at the high school, graduation will be approaching soon so I can very much relate to this piece. I am a serious student and would like to see more people care about their studies. Last spring when we took the exit exam, I noticed that a large portion of my peers refused to take it seriously. It is, essentially, an extremely simple test to pass and anyone who does not put effort into it, in my opinion, does not deserve to participate in a graduation ceremony.
Why should these slackers have the right to walk at graduation? Why do they deserve to be associated with the students who had worked hard for the past four years while they didn’t? They have not earned it. These students should be fully educated on the material of the exam. If the test is not passed then there is no reason to be allowed to exit high school.
