A young man on a bicycle was struck by a vehicle on San Benito Street shortly before 2 p.m. and was airlifted to a Bay Area hospital, according to authorities.

The accident occurred in the 800 block of San Benito Street around 1:45 p.m. The male, 21, of Hollister, was treated and stabilized at the scene by emergency responders before being transported by ambulance and then airlifted to a Bay Area hospital, said Hollister police Capt. David Westrick.

The bicyclist and a Dodge Caravan both were northbound on San Benito Street when the bike rider turned into the roadway, Westrick said. It was near Intero Real Estate, and they were approaching South Street.

The bicyclist was thrown off the bike and suffered facial injuries, Westrick said.

The police department and fire department responded, along with the ambulance company AMR.
