A 45-year-old Hollister man was killed Sunday night when he lost control of a truck that traveled down an embankment on Quien Sabe Road and rolled over several times, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Shortly before 7:30 p.m., the CHP responded to the scene at Quien Sabe Road, east of Santa Anita Road, and observed the 2000 Chevrolet S-10 about 250 feet down the dirt embankment. The investigation determined the driver was westbound on Quien Sabe Road at a “speed that was unsafe for the wet roadway and weather conditions.” The truck traveled down the embankment and overturned several times, according to a statement from the CHP.

The man was ejected from the truck and pronounced dead at the scene. Two male juveniles, ages 16 and 17, of Hollister, also were in the truck. The 17-year-old sustained major injuries, while the younger male sustained minor injuries, according to the CHP. Both were transported to Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The statement from the CHP indicated that the man who died and the 17-year-old were not wearing seat belts, but the 16-year-old had been wearing one.

The San Benito County Sheriff’s Office, which also acts as the local coroner, could not confirm the man’s identity as of this morning because it was unclear whether the family had received official notification.
