Mi Pueblo was allowed to retain their bright corporate colors at Thursday night’s planning commission meeting.

After the Hispanic foods grocery chain butted heads with the Gilroy Planning Department on how to make the store blend in better with the beige buildings on the 700 block of First Street in Gilroy, Mi Pueblo decided to let the city’s planning commission hear its case and filed for an appeal.

Groggy-eyed commissioners were reluctant to take on the item as the clock struck 10:52 p.m. – the commission can forgo any item on the agenda if it’s taken on after 11 p.m. – but the item sparked their interest, and they pulled through until midnight.

The result was a 5-2 vote to approve Mi Pueblo’s appeal on the commission’s recommendation to tone down the color scheme of the store.

Commissioner Thomas Boe, seconded by Ermelindo Puente, initiated the motion to allow Mi Pueblo to use its corporate colors as part of the facade with the requirement of working with planning department staff and local businesses to come to a more acceptable color scheme.
