If for no other reason, Harvey Sandoval said people should come to the model train show in San Juan Bautista this weekend to “see all the crazy train people.”

The second annual San Juan Bautista Model Train Show and Swap Meet will be held Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the San Juan Bautista Community Center. Visitors will have the opportunity to buy, sell or trade model trains and there will also be demonstrations and “how to” clinics.

Sandoval, a San Juan resident, started the event last year because he said he’s “tired of selling popcorn” to raise money each year for Boy Scout Troop 428, which receives all proceeds from the event.

Proceeds come primarily from renting vendor tables, the $1 admission charge and raffles, for which gifts are donated by local hobby shops, said Sandoval, who added that the vendor tables sold out in January.

The Scout troop plans to use the money earned this year to buy a trailer for a camping trip to Idaho.

“The bottom line is it’s a benefit for the Boy Scouts. That’s the first goal,” Sandoval said. “The second goal is to get people together that are train people.”

Sandoval said he expects “train nuts” of all ages to come from San Benito, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. Last year’s event drew about 200 visitors, he said. He expects about 200 to 300 this year.

“It’s just a fun event, low pressure,” he said.
