A Hollister resident was arrested for driving under the influence when a collision between his motorcycle and another car sent him to the hospital Sunday.
Richard Lee Austere, 48, was driving his 1988 Harley Davidson motorcycle eastbound on Santa Ana Road around 9:30 p.m., approaching Fairview Road, when he failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection, according to a California Highway Patrol statement.
He was subsequently struck by a 1991 Honda Civic driven by 20-year-old Hollister resident Joseph Daman, who was traveling southbound on Fairview Road.
Austere was wearing a helmet and suffered minor lacerations to the left side of his face and some pain to his shoulder and hand, said CHP Officer Brad Voyles.
Daman was not injured.
CHP officers were able to detect signs and symptoms of alcohol when they arrived at the scene, Voyles said.
After Austere was transported via ambulance to Hazel Hawkins Hospital, he was later booked into the San Benito County Jail in lieu of $13,000 bail.
This is Austere’s second DUI arrest, with a prior DUI arrest in Santa Cruz County in 2000, Voyles said.
The motorcycle sustained moderate damage, with no damage to the car.
