An unidentified man was injured in an accident at the intersection of Highways 25 and 156 that snarled commuter traffic for more than 30 minutes Thursday evening.

The motorist was taken by ambulance to Hazel Hawkins Hospital where he was reportedly treated for moderate injuries and is expected to be released from the hospital by today, the California Highway Patrol said.

The 6:34 p.m. accident reportedly happened when a white Freightliner delivery truck, hauling a small amount of sliced cactus and other vegetable products, was westbound on Highway 156 approaching the Highway 25 intersection, the CHP said.

At about the same time, a tan-colored Chevrolet Silverado was in the southbound lane of Highway 25 entering the intersection at Highway 156 headed toward Hollister, the CHP said.

Crash investigators said details are still sketchy, but it appears that the delivery truck ran the red light at the intersection and struck the front left side of the Silverado.

The force of the collision sent the pickup spinning through the westbound lanes of Highway 156 and the Silverado rolled over an unknown number of times and slid down a small embankment on the side of the highway, the CHP said. The motorist taken to HHH was in the Silverado.

The Freightliner attempted to veer away from the Chevrolet just before the collision but that sent it skidding out of control down the middle of Highway 156 until it fish-tailed and flipped over onto its left side, the CHP said.

The crash is still under investigation, but the CHP said neither drugs nor alcohol played a roll in the collision.

Additional information about the accident is expected to be released later today.
