The jury trial of Travis J. Hoffmeister, suspected of killing a 20-year-old Hollister woman and leaving her body on C Street in June 2007, has been delayed by four months due to a busy court calendar.

Public Defender Gregory LaForge and prosecutor Patrick Palacios spurred discussions about moving the trial due to a large number of jury trials on the calendar in the coming weeks. Hoffmeister had been scheduled for a jury trial Jan. 25, and a judge Thursday agreed to move it until May 24, according to court records.

LaForge attributed the calendar backup to the state-required furloughs on one Wednesday per month.

“Even though it’s just one day, it impacts the whole system,” LaForge said.

Hoffmeister, 25, is suspected of killing Christella Macias in June 2007 and leaving her body near the end of C Street, where it was found by a resident in the area. He has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The case had no suspect until authorities in March 2008 used state-analyzed forensic evidence to allegedly tie Hoffmeister to the crime.
