It will be up to the new sheriff to make plans for any potential cuts to the office.
The board of supervisors expected to receive an outline of cuts from the sheriff’s office Dec. 21, in hopes of eliminating $286,000 from the budget, but instead no cuts were made.
The board asked the sheriff’s office in August to come back with recommended cuts in December, giving the department time to find additional revenue. But outgoing Sheriff Curtis Hill handed off the cuts to his successor, Sheriff-elect Darren Thompson. The office’s total annual budget is about $11.4 million.
Supervisor Anthony Botelho was unhappy with the decision to put off the cuts because of the county’s financial troubles.
“It’s not just the sheriff’s office that has to make cuts,” he said. “The sooner it happens, the better the county will be.”
Supervisors asked County Administrative Officer Rich Inman to bring in the new sheriff once he is appointed to make the recommended cuts, Botelho said. Thompson isn’t expected to go before the board for a few months because he would need to get acquainted with the job.
“We will see if he has any other cuts in mind,” Botelho said. “It’s too bad we didn’t make the cuts back in July when we should have done it.”
One of the moves the sheriff’s office did make last summer was eliminating the undersheriff position, effective in January. Pat Turturici, who lost to Thompson in the November election, previously held the role. That decision is estimated to save around $150,000 annually. Turturici recently resigned from the position.
