One suggestions is to water early in the morning or in the evening since midday water loses as much as 30 percent of the water to evaporation. Others include using several short watering sessions rather than a single long one since lawns can absorb only so much water quickly. Keeping grass at least two inches high helps shade the roots and hold moisture. Aerateing lawns regularly and using mulch around plants can reduce evaporation. Water trees slowly, deeply and infrequently encourages deep rooting. Another suggestion is to change irrigation timers with the seasons, as less water is needed in different seasons.
