Palma’s Matt Ostarello scored the game-winner during extra time and the Chieftains pulled out a 2-1 victory over San Benito on Monday in Hollister.

It was teammate Reuben Prieto who intercepted a San Benito pass in the 81st minute that set up Ostarello’s goal. Prieto beat a defender for a breakaway situation, then dished off to Ostarello for the game-winner.

The Haybalers move to 1-5-1 in the Tri-County Athletic League with the loss, 4-9-1 overall.

It was also the second narrow defeat in a row for San Benito. Just last week, the ‘Balers lost to Gilroy 4-3 after the Mustangs scored the go-ahead goal with 12 minutes remaining in regulation.

Palma, which improves to 5-1-2 in the TCAL, 11-1-2 overall, took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a score from Daniel Johnsen in the 4th minute.

San Benito tied the game at 1-all early in the second half when Brian Cruz deposited a score off a penalty kick in the 46th minute.

‘Baler keeper Christian Maravilla had seven saves on Monday.

Earlier in the season, Palma easily defeated San Benito 5-1 in Salinas.

San Benito will travel to Alisal on Thursday to take on the Trojans. Game time is 6 p.m.
