Mountain lion

A mountain lion showed up again Monday at Brigantino Park a day after residents initially witnessed one there, leading to a park closure.

Police on Tuesday announced the park was reopened and noted that the mountain lion had not returned since Monday.

On Monday, a day after the initial reports, Hollister police officers were called to the park around noon to investigate reports of a mountain lion there, according to police. Officers observed the mountain lion in the park as they arrived. Hollister police called in animal control officers and the state fish and game department.

It appears as though the cougar fled.

“Hollister Police Departments Animal Care & Services Bureau will continue to monitor the park for the animal. The public is asked to use caution and call 911 if the animal is sighted,” according to a statement from police.

Brigantino Park on Hollister’s far west side neighbors private property that is leased for cattle grazing. It is also close to hills on the city’s outskirts.
