Twenty college-bound Bay Area students received Palpung Scholarships July 11, in San Jose, including Yvette Ramos, of Hollister.

The Palpung Scholarships, worth $1,000 each, are being awarded for the second year. They are sponsored by Palpung Lungtok Choeling, a Buddhist organization established in San Jose in 2000. It is a branch of Palpung Sherab Ling, the monastic seat of the 12th Tai Situ Rinpoche in northern India.

Palpung (Glorious Accumulation) Lungtok (Teaching & Practicing to Reach Enlightenment) Choeling (Dharma Center) has established these scholarships because it believes that education is the cornerstone of a person’s future and that young people are the key element for a better world. The scholarships are designed to give these students an opportunity to succeed and grow and be a good example and role model for other young people.

More than 65 applications for the scholarship were received and with difficulty, the final 20 were chosen, organizers said. The applicants have been accepted at universities including MIT, Harvard, Carnegie Mellon, Xavier (Louisiana), San Jose State University, U.C. Berkeley, Santa Clara, UCLA, CSU East Bay, U.C. San Diego, USF, Sacramento State, CSU Stanislaus, Harvard and Mt. Holyoke. Winners have overcome many challenges on their path to higher education; being immigrants and having to learn English, living in areas where education was not a priority and not being in a high-income situation.
