Even in the rain Saturday, some residents were dancing in the streets.
A few women were dancing on a closed portion of San Benito Street at the Hollister Downtown Association’s event Saturday afternoon to celebrate a long-awaited change for the main drag.
The HDA event commemorated Caltrans’ recent handover of San Benito Street in exchange for the Highway 25 bypass.
Business leaders for decades have pursued local control of San Benito Street – long before the 1989 Measure A initiative that partially funded the bypass construction finished five years ago. They hope gaining local control will allow for more flexibility with redevelopment and fewer headaches when planning downtown events.
