Each year the Free Lance selects a San Benito High School male and female athlete of the year who best represent their school both athletically and academically.
This year the Free Lance will also be honoring some of the runner-up athletes as well.
The top picks will be featured in an upcoming edition of the Free Lance.
We will take a look at how they did during the school year and will make the decision based on coaches’ recommendations and nominations from the community.
The choice is always a tough one to make. Each year there are deserving athletes who are not chosen for one reason or another.
Big factors in selecting the athlete will be his or her contributions on the sports field. Ideally, the top selection will be a senior.
The award will be based on what the athlete did athletically this year, but other years may also be considered in helping to make the decision.
We are primarily looking for people who are well balanced in two or three sports.
Although some athletes may be dominant in one sport, they might not have played or excelled in other sports. League awards will be taken into consideration, but an athlete’s respect by teammates is also important.
The sports’ popularity and the strength of competition comes into play.
Another consideration will be what other activities he or she is involved with. The athlete’s GPA is a big factor.
Anyone is welcome to submit nominations. All submissions need to be turned in in writing by May 26 to be considered.
Please include your name, phone number, the reason for your choice and relation to the athlete.
