Public input requested for master plan

Hollister residents can join Pinnacles National Monument staff Monday, March 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the San Benito County Board of Supervisors Chambers for a public input session.

The National Park Services will be working on a new general management plan for Pinnacles National Monument.

The last general management plan update was completed in 1976. In the following decades, the monument grew in size while staff expanded to increase research on the park’s geology, ecosystems and history. The park is a protected habitat and in the years since the last plan update, staff have made advances in the protection of the California condor and California red-legged frogs as well as removing non-native species such as wild pigs.

Staff have also restored Chalone Creek and rerouted Bear Gulch Cave Trail.

The new plan will highlight goals for the future of the park.

The public comment period will continues through May 31.

Thoughts on the plan update can also be sent through the Web site at www.nps.gov/pinn, or by e-mail to [email protected] as well as by mail to: Pinnacles National Monument GMP, 5000 Hwy. 146, Paicines, CA 95043.

Other planning sessions:

– Tues. March 20, 7-9 p.m. at Jefferson School’s meeting hall, 221 Old Hernandez Road, Paicines.

– Sat. March 24, 1-3 p.m. at Santa Clara University, Arts and Sciences Bldg., (Building 804), Room 129, 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara.
