A fire started early Thursday morning at West Coast Rubber Recycling, but was contained to the pile of material where it started, the fire chief said.

The fire was reported shortly before 5 a.m. at West Coast Rubber Recycling, 1501 Lana Way. Though there was a lot of visible smoke from the outside, there were no injuries or major damage, Fire Chief Fred Cheshire said.

The chief explained that shredding machinery creates heated rubber materials and that in the normal course of business, the plant workers separate those pieces. The finely ground rubber material, used to make parking lot bumpers, caught fire and was isolated to one area.

The chief said there were no building occupants at the time of the fire.

Hollister fire crews were finished within a couple of hours, Cheshire said. It helped that they were familiar with the building due to a prior fire at the plant, in April 2012.
