Hollister – A Hollister man was taken by helicopter to a San Jose hospital Saturday evening after being hit by a truck while standing in the middle of San Juan Road.

Police have not identified the 40-year-old man. The man was taken by ambulance to Hazel Hawkins Hospital and then flown to the Regional Medical Center of San Jose, said Officer Rosie Betanio, a spokeswoman for the Hollister Police Department.

Betanio said the man was taken into surgery Saturday evening, but had no update on his condition as of press time Monday.

The man was hit by a woman driving a Toyota Tacoma in the 1600 block of San Juan Road at 6:36pm Saturday, Betanio said. Authorities believe the man had been drinking and was standing in the eastbound lane of San Juan Road, Betanio said. The woman did not see the man until the last moment when her truck hit the man head on, causing him to roll onto the hood, Betanio said. The woman was driving 45 mph when she struck the man, police said.

Officers responded to a 911 call and were on the scene of the accident by 6:42pm, Betanio said. Conditions were clear, dry and dark with street lights, Betanio said.

The driver was not believed to be under the influence of alcohol, was wearing her seatbelt and had no injuries, Betanio said. The woman was able to drive her truck, which had moderate damage to its front end, away from the accident.
