Police officers Wednesday arrested a Hollister man, suspected of
possessing a stolen handgun and driving a stolen vehicle, after a
brief traffic and foot pursuit, according to the Hollister Police
Department.

Police arrested Damien M. Baxter, 25, after the pursuit that started with a traffic enforcement stop at 1:34 p.m. and led to a chase and the suspect crashing the car into a parked vehicle near Flora and San Felipe roads, according to police.

Police alleged that Baxter dropped a loaded handgun while leaving the vehicle and running from officers. Police and deputies from the county sheriff’s office surrounded the area, and located Baxter hiding nearby.

He continued to resist and jumped over a fence with fortified concertina wire before being taken into custody, according to police. He and an officer injured during his apprehension were treated at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital and released.

Police said the gun and vehicle were reported as stolen. They also alleged he is a gang member and parolee currently out on bail.

Baxter was booked into the San Benito County Jail for the following recommended charges; felony evading police, felon carrying a firearm, car theft, possession of stolen vehicle, committing a felony offense while out on bail, possession of a concealed firearm, providing a false name, possession of stolen property, resisting arrest and violation of parole.
