Trailing 10-2 at halftime, the San Benito High girls water polo team was unable to mount a comeback against host Live Oak on Wednesday and fell by an 18-7 deficit.
Hannah Blake, Hannah Smith and Demi Gatrell each deposited two goals apiece for the Lady Balers, which fall to 4-4 overall as a result of the loss.
San Benito’s Tiffany Hill also added a score.
“They’re really fast swimmers and they play together year-round,” San Benito head coach Hayley Vandercook said of Live Oak, which defeated the Lady Balers last year by a 12-3 margin.
“We play them every year just to play a good team and to gain experience,” Vandercook added.
Wednesday’s match was the first game San Benito had experienced in a little more than a week, after it lost to Salinas 10-7 on Sept. 15. The Lady Balers won’t return to TCAL play until next Wednesday, Sept. 30, when Monterey will visit Hollister.
Match time is 5:30 p.m.
SBHS Boys Water Polo
The San Benito High boys water polo team visited Live Oak on Wednesday but couldn’t pull out an upset, as the Acorns handily defeated the Haybalers 22-8.
It was a non-league game for San Benito, which is now 2-4 overall.
The Balers will head north on Friday for the 32-team St. Francis Invitational, which will take place at four different pools, including St. Francis’ in Mountain View, Los Gatos, Campolindo in Moraga, and Acalanes in Lafayette.
The Balers will play California High of San Ramon on Friday at Acalanes.
Match time is 3 p.m. San Benito is expected to play at least four matches.
In other news, the San Benito junior varsity team defeated Live Oak on Wednesday, although no score was reported.
