Both the boys and girls water polo teams at San Benito High defeated Watsonville on Monday by sizeable margins.

The Baler boys topped Watsonville at home 20-7 behind five goals from Josh Schafer and four more scores by Nick Angulo.

In fact, each member of the varsity team pocketed a goal on Monday, with Eric Nicolaysen, Tyler Agan, Chris Martinez and Nathan Thomas scoring twice. Trevor Agan, Danny Jarrett and Tyler Reuther each added one goal apiece.

San Benito (3-1 TCAL, 6-6) will play at the South Valley Polo Fest on Friday at Live Oak High. The Balers will open with a 3 p.m. match against Mitty.

Meanwhile, the Lady Balers posted a 22-5 victory over Watsonville on Monday with each member of the varsity squad scoring a goal as well.

Demi Gatrell led the team with four goals, while Amanda Virak added three. Katie Thorpe, normally in net, supplied two second-half scores.

Monday’s victory for the Lady Balers followed a strong performance at last weekend’s Aptos Invitational. San Benito compiled a 2-2 record at the 16-team tournament, and finished in sixth place as a result.

The Lady Balers opened the tournament with a 9-6 loss to Pioneer, despite three goals each from Hannah Smith and Caitlin Schafer.

San Benito rebounded with an 11-8 victory against Harbor, in which Schafer and Virak each scored three goals. The Lady Balers then continued their winning ways when it edged Homestead 7-6, a win head coach Hayley Vandercook said was the biggest of the tournament.

“They’re a really good team,” Vandercook said of Homestead.

Smith and Schafer both had two goals apiece.

San Benito couldn’t upset Aragon in its final match, however. Although Schafer, Smith, Gatrell, Tiffany Hill and Tiffany Wilson each scored goals, the Lady Balers lost 15-5.

San Benito (3-1 TCAL, 7-6) will host the H2Oktoberfest tournament on Saturday in Hollister. The Lady Balers will open with Santa Catalina at 7:30 a.m.
