On a hot summer day there’s nothing more inviting than a cool, clear, clean swimming pool. Nelson’s Pool Service is ready to help get and keep your pool or spa in shape for swimming.

A new local business, Nelson’s Pool Service is owned by Michael and Mary Nelson, who were encouraged and trained by a friend who services pools and spas in Morgan Hill and south San Jose. Michael also attends seminars offered by the Independent Pool & Spa Service Association.

“There’s a lot to learn,” he said. “Things are constantly changing.”

Mary said some people who own pools simply haven’t been educated.

“Many people buy homes that come with a pool,” she said. “If they’ve never owned a pool before, they might not know how to properly service or care for one. Chances are the previous homeowners didn’t leave instructions. The equipment will last longer with proper maintenance.”

“You think you’ve seen it all until you go to the next pool,” Michael said. “We recently cleaned a pool filter that hadn’t been cleaned for three years. Another client covers his pool all winter, then is surprised to see it green with algae when the cover comes off. Pool maintenance needs to be done on a year round basis.”

Customers can choose from a variety of services.

“Our clients can choose our monthly service, which is full service, or just a chemical check,” Michael said. “Though it’s called a monthly service, it’s actually done once a week. Some people just want a one-time cleanup. Maybe they’ve bought a home with a dirty pool or haven’t cared for it during the winter and want it cleaned up.”

Nelson’s Pool Service can also replace the sealing strip that runs around a pool between the deck and sidewalk. “Water can get underneath and build up through the years,” Michael said. “I take out the old seal, which is pliable, and pour another strip around it.”

Full-service customers will have their pool chemicals checked and treated on a weekly basis. If necessary, the walls, steps and tile will be brushed, the water surface skimmed and the pool sweep, skimmer and pump baskets will be cleaned. Vacuuming and cleaning the backwash filter will be done as needed.

“We also do any equipment repair that pertains to the pool,” Michael said. “Minor repairs will be done on the spot. Anything major, we’ll call and get the client’s permission first. Our customers are also welcome to call us if something doesn’t work. If we can’t do, it we’ll get our customers in touch with people who can. If someone is interested in getting supplies, we can provide them with everything from thermometers to covers.”

In today’s busy world, having a professional service care for an item as important as a pool can be reassuring to customers.

“There’s a freedom of knowing it’s done for you, especially with regular service,” Michael said. “People invest a lot of money for a pool or spa. There’s a proper way to care for one, including which type of chemicals to use and how to add them. For example, you don’t pour granular chlorine in the bottom of a black pool. You’ll bleach out the color.”

Mary noted that their clients don’t need to store several bottles of chemicals because the Nelsons supply those.

“This is especially nice for people with children or pets,” she said. “Also, the elderly appreciate not having to carry around heavy chemical containers.”

Nelson’s Pool Service is open to customers wanting full service, one-time cleaning or with special needs.

“We’re more than happy to take care of pools for people who are going on vacation and only want our service for a week or a month,” Mary said. “We live in a commuter community. Having someone take care of your pool is a real plus. You can come home from work and jump in. We’ll do the work for you.”
