Local artists can apply for Creative Work Fund grants for the first time

The San Benito County Arts Council is looking for proposals of new art projects in visual and performing arts to apply for funding through the Creative Work Fund Grant program.

The Arts Council will serve as a fiscal sponsor for artists and nonprofit organizations that would like to collaborate on new works in dance, theater, literature and the visual arts. Those interested can submit a summary of their project to the Arts Council at in**@sa***********.org by Oct. 12. The summary should include a description of the art project, contact information for all artists involved, the collaborating organization and a brief budget outline.

The lead artist must have residency in one of the following counties for at least two years: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, Napa, San Benito, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma and Stanislaus. The lead artists cannot be a board member of the collaborating nonprofit.

The work should be in the areas of visual and performing arts. The artists must collaborate with the nonprofit organization in all creative aspects of the project.

The fund offers grants from $10,000 to $40,000 per project and is funded through the William and Flora Hewlett and James Irvine Foundations, and administered through the Walter and Elise Haas Fund. Artists will receive two-thirds of the total grant awarded.
