A solitary walker strolled past the new play area at Veterans Memorial Park last week. The play area is located between athletic fields at the Memorial Drive park, not far from the skateboard bowls.
In addition to the play equipment, workers have planted trees throughout parking lots. The play area is just one manifestation of a flurry of activity at county parks this year, according to Ken Nattell, facilities and grounds manager for the county. A similar play area is complete at the San Benito County Historical Park, just south of Tres Pinos.
Both play areas were erected at a cost of about $40,000 each, Nattell said. Future plans for the historical park may involve new barbecue facilities, drinking fountains, horse shoe pits and a softball field.
Nattell, who joined the county staff last May, also recently completed a joint use agreement with Spring Grove School. Work is nearly complete on upgraded athletic fields, and new trees and landscaping have been installed. The agreement makes school facilities available to the public on weekends and after school hours.
“It’s undergoing a pretty major transformation,” Nattell said. “We may even do lighting out there.”
