Hollister streets official Julian Gaytan described the leaf situation in the city as follows: “They are everywhere.”
He might have been exaggerating some, but in parts of the city that statement isn’t that far off.
Gaytan noted how city crews this week were busy on cleaning leaves by using the giant vacuum machine you may have seen driving around town. Most recently, he said they had been picking up the piles – left on the side of the road by residents – in the areas of Dunne Park and the residential neighborhoods near what crews call the “Fruit Bowl,” because it consists of such street names as Plum, Peach and Apple courts.
Streets crews time the clean-up sessions so they are a day before the sweeper is scheduled to go out.
“We’re trying to stay a little ahead of the sweepers as they go,” Gaytan said.
The pick-up should continue until about mid-January if nature follows historical trends, he said.
Otherwise, crews are doing their best to keep up on other duties such as potholes that need filling, he said.
