Two tickets to the gun show
You might wonder whether those small, rectangular signs posted periodically – and advertising such events as a gun show at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds – are legal.
The simple answer is, they’re blatantly illegal, and promoters who have posted them in such locations as the fencing around the future courthouse site and a pole overhanging San Benito Street at the non-functional Jessie’s gas station downtown are subject to $100 fines for each offense, and for each day the law outlined in the municipal code is violated.
The City of Hollister prohibits such “off-site advertising” signs, among many other types of signage, in the zoning section of the municipal code. And according to the state Government Code, each offense is subject to those $100 fines. While the signs get little resistance in Hollister, largely because the code enforcement division has been short-staffed, the City of Gilroy down the road recently ramped up its enforcement and fined the gun show promoter $4,600 for more than 40 illegal signs placed there.
Code Enforcement Director Mike Chambless – who doubles as the airport director – was out and could not be reached before press time. The Pinnacle will be sure to catch up with Chambless, however, to get the city’s perspective on the signs.
