The Hollister City Council this week approved spending an additional $197,000 in redevelopment funds on the excavation and demolition at the former Leatherback Industries location. The city bought the site for $4 million a few years back and has plans to redevelop the area, possibly for a new YMCA, commercial tenants and potentially Gavilan College for its planned expansion of classroom space in Hollister.

During the demolition, the contractor uncovered there was soil contamination due to various uses at the site by the former company that manufactured roofing materials. The additional $197,000 covers the additional costs for removal. The total contract amount with Pantano Excavation, or Pantano Demolition, now comes to $598,000, according to a city report. Pantano’s contract started in July 2009 for demolition of structures and removal of equipment.
