The great wall of trash
The wall of trash at the busy intersection of the Hwy. 25 bypass and Tres Pinos Road near the Chevron service station is still an issue, a month after The Pinnacle first inquired about the eyesore.
But Arman Nazemi, assistant public works director for the County of San Benito, is on the case.
The chain link fence east of the gas station has become a catching point for cardboard boxes, paper and other types of trash – most of which likely comes from the shopping center behind Chevron.
“We’re no forensic experts, but somebody said there are some trash cans behind the pizza place [Neighborhood Pizza] and The Dollar Store that look like they don’t have lids,” Nazemi said. “As the wind currents get in there, it picks up the trash, which ends up in the air and on the fences. We need to talk to those businesses and make sure they put the lids on the trash cans and keep them closed so this doesn’t happen again.”
Nazemi said he has spoken with a road operations official who said he would speak with the owner of the Chevron property to discuss a plan to clean up the fence line.
“Even though it’s in the county’s jurisdiction, it’s private property, so we have to get permission to enter the property in order to clean out the garbage,” he said. “The owner would need to be notified, so at this point I’ve asked our road operations person to contact the owner because he knows those guys. I don’t know whether the effort has been made or not.”
When a clean-up plan is in place, The Pinnacle will report on it.
