A recent trend continued tonight as Hollister residents felt a magnitude-3.8 earthquake, the third temblor for the area of 3.4 or higher in the past week, according to a preliminary reading from the U.S. Geological Survey.
Tonight’s quake occurred at 10:06 p.m. and had an epicenter seven miles south of Tres Pinos, around the same area as two earthquakes Thursday and another Tuesday of at least a magnitude-3.4, according to the USGS Web site. The earthquake tonight was centered about 3.9 miles deep, according to the USGS.
The USGS also has at least two reported aftershocks in the same area, a magnitude-2.4 at 10:09 p.m. and a magnitude 1.7 at 10:16 p.m.
A San Benito County sheriff’s dispatcher said shortly before 10:30 p.m. that nobody had called after the initial earthquake or its aftershocks.
Thursday’s earthquake registered at magnitude-3.9 while Tuesday’s was magnitude-3.4.
