Panelists and readers answered the following: Should Gavilan College plan to build its permanent Hollister campus downtown?
Keith Snow: Yes, This is a great opportunity for all the students in Hollister. Education is everything and the kids deserve this. The students should come first, this means more opportunities for them, when they advance from high school to college, they will have something to look forward to in pursuing their goals and careers. Especially for those who cannot travel to Gilroy everyday. Even though the mayor opposes this, we definitely need to look into this more and get it started. The kids are the future.Â
Nants Foley: Gavilan will do what it needs to do, regardless of my opinion. I think a downtown campus would bring vitality, but perhaps traffic and parking issues as well. It would be nice to have something go on the Leatherback site. I am still hoping to see the YMCA build. So much potential in Hollister!  Â
Mary Zanger: Yes. A permanent full Gavilan College campus located in downtown Hollister would be a dream come true. It would excite downtown like a magic carpet flying into the 21st century.Â
Cesar Flores: Yes! The original Gavilán College was in Hollister. We have enough students that would love to take required classes here in Hollister instead of having to go to Gilroy.Â
Ruth Erickson: Many local people wanted a college to be built in Hollister in the first place, with all the amenities in the vicinity. If they sell the Airline Highway property they would have funds for an in-town college at the old Leatherback site. We need the college now, not in 20 years. There are hundreds of full-time equivalent students commuting to Gilroy plus all those at the Briggs Building. Let’s get moving on this long-time needed project to accommodate all the incoming students from the new homes being built.
