PEBBLE BEACH – Even without the presence of funnyman Bill Murray, long considered the ‘Clown Prince of Pebble Beach’, the AT&T National Pro-Am’s 3M Celebrity Shootout on Wednesday still brought out thousands of fans.
The top priority for the spectators was autographs and pictures with their favorite actors, comedians, athletes, musicians and entertainers. The 12-player, six-team field was filled with a bit of something for everyone.
The pairings included Clint Eastwood with Kenny G; Kevin Costner with Clay Walker; Ray Romano with Kevin James; George Lopez with Craig T. Nelson; Emmitt Smith with Chris O’Donnell; and Huey Lewis with Michael Bolton.
The five-hole event, which offers money prizes donated to the celebrity’s charity of their choice for winning a hole, came down to the final hole since ties on each of the first four pushed the prize to a winner-take-all $29,000.
On the par-5 18th hole at Pebble Beach, Romano and James put the pressure on with the King of Queens chipping inches away from the hole to set up Everybody Loves Raymond for the tap-in par. Bolton had a chance to tie, but his putt did not fall and Lewis tapped in for a six. Costner and O’Donnell both had their chances to tie, but settled for sixes. The last hope was Smith, whose putt lipped out to give all the charity winnings to Romano and James.
With a one-tie-all-tie format, every team had a shot, building the pot to $6,000 at the second hole and $10,000 at the third hole, which was the 15th hole of Pebble. On the 15th, Kenny G sank the first birdie of the day, only to be matched by Smith, rolling the pot over to $15,000 on the fourth hole, which was the 17th hole.
On the second-to-last-hole, James drained a short putt, eyeing the win, but Lewis matched him, increasing the bounty to $29,000 on the final hole.
Today is the first round of the AT&T Pro-Am, which will take place on all three courses: Pebble Beach, Poppy Hills and Spyglass. Friday and Saturday scores are combined with the top golfers moving on to Sunday’s final round.
