I find it interesting listening to players discuss how far they
have hit certain shots.

I hit my tee shot 300 yards and my 7-iron 170 yards

– etc. etc.
I have to tell you right now that there are less than six people
in San Benito County who can hit a tee shot 300 yards, and I can
probably name three of them.

Why is this important? Well, if you realistically know how far you hit the ball, then you can manage the course better distance.

For instance, if you really hit the ball 225 off of the tee, it might be questionable whether or not you can reach the green with your next shot. You might consider taking all of the risks out of play (bunkers, water hazards, etc.) by selecting a club that will leave you short of the problems and then pitch onto the green from there.

Once again, try to remind yourself how far you can really hit a ball and not how far you would like to hit a ball.
