“WHOA, doggies! Is she nuts?” you ask. (Possibly, but that’s another story.) Actually, you might be surprised at the number of homes bought and sold over the holiday season. Perhaps it’s because you decide you cannot cook another holiday dinner in your tiny kitchen, or your kids are starting to have kids and everyone no longer fits around the table in the dining room. You suddenly realize you need more space.
Or just the opposite! You declare you will never host and cook another huge dinner as long as you live, and you want to sell the 3500-square-foot dream home with the huge gourmet kitchen and move to a little place at the beach where the kids can come visit only if they stay in a motel and take you out to dinner.
It’s also true the end of one year causes many people to take stock of where they are and the road they may choose to travel in the coming one. People will be coming to town to visit loved ones: They may decide to stay. Others will be visiting Grandma in Ohio and contemplating bringing her out to live closer to them.
Everyone says the spring is a great time to sell a home. But since everyone says it, everyone does it. Your home will have more competition in the spring. And you know that guy down the street who spends every spare moment working on his home? Yeah…his house will be on the market, too. Bummer.
So if you can handle the double-whammy of holiday preparations and house-showcasing preparations, this can be a great time to present your home at its best. Chances are, you have it decorated tastefully. If necessary, you can even spray the cobwebs with gold paint and claim they’re garlands! The kitchen is alive with seasonal smells. If you don’t cook, simply boil some cinnamon and cloves on the stovetop or in the microwave.
This past week was a slow one for real estate, which comes as no surprise to anyone. However, there were 14 new listings, and 10 houses went into contract. The contingencies were removed on four properties, readying them to close escrow. The transactions were closed for six deals…new homes for Thanksgiving! Cancellations and withdrawls of the listing contracts were posted for four properties, and four more expired. The inventory stands at 214, which is up about 5 percent from where it has been for several months. Interest rates continue to be phenomenal.
