The Crimson Crusader’s trusty car, the Red Rocket, is a rubber-burning, pavement-melting, speed demon. But it seems wherever he goes somebody always wants to test the champion in a race.
And there is one street in particular that many local residents have deemed a drag strip in spite of its close proximity to Marguerite Maze Middle School – Meridian Road.
And even though the Red Rocket boasts awe-inspiring horsepower, our hero always obeys the rules of the road. Others, however, see the long, open Meridian Road as the perfect place to put the pedal to the metal.
After last week when a suspected drunk driver smashed his car into a pickup truck on the intersection of Meridian Road and Memorial Drive, several residents, including this week’s Red Phone caller, are demanding speed bumps be installed near the school to discourage speed racers from practicing for NASCAR near the students.
The Crimson Crusader asked Hollister City Engineer David Rubcic about the road and its need for speed.
“We’ve received a number of complaints about Meridian Road,” he said. “Speed bumps, however, are not going to happen. It’s just too major of a road to install speed bumps. It’s something that’s on our radar, but really there is not a whole lot we can do. It really comes down to police enforcing the speed limit.”
