There were two official candidates in the race for District 3 on the Hollister City Council just hours before the deadline.

There was one official candidate in District 2, while two other residents had indicated intentions to file hours before the deadline, according to the Hollister City Clerk’s Office.

The two open seats are in District 2, where Councilwoman Eugenia Sanchez has declined to seek a second term, and District 3, where Councilwoman Pauline Valdivia is running for a fourth term, while challenged by Scott McPhail. That district encompasses much of the city’s south-central side.

In District 2, former Councilman Robert Scattini had been the only officially qualified candidate as of 3 p.m., two hours before the deadline, which came after press time for the Pinnacle.

City Clerk Geri Johnson, however, had confirmed that two residents expressed plans to turn in final paperwork on time.

They are Sergio Montanez, who already had filed a form indicating his intention for candidacy, and Esteban Guzman. Scattini served in District 2, largely covering the west side, from 2002 to 2006.

Look for more to come on the candidates running for office.
