Get ready for hotrods to invade downtown Hollister Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the 23rd Annual Hollister Street Festival. The yearly event is expected to bring in at least 150 classic cars.

Jeana Arnold, the events coordinator for the Hollister Downtown Association, said the planning committee decided to change up the awards because “we were told they weren’t the best.”

“We just got confirmation from [Hollister Police] Chief [Jeff] Miller that he will give out an award for ‘most likely to get a ticket,'” Arnold said.

Other clever categories will include best flames, longest distance traveled and more.

The layout of the car show will be slightly different this year, with cars backing into spots along the main drag. Arnold said the hardest part to coordinating the event is that she needs to gather input from others about what will work best for the car show part of the festival since she is a “non-car show person.”

So far 65 car owners have pre-registered, though Arnold said many owners sign up the day of the event. Many locals participate year after year, and there are always some owners who come from Modesto, Sacramento or other cities in the Valley to show off their cars.

“There is something for the whole family,” said Arnold, who served as a volunteer chair for the event a few years ago. “We have the car show we have five bands with live music. We have a whole kids’ entertainment area on Fifth Street.”

The kids’ area will include bounce houses, carnival-style games and a color contest sponsored by the local YMCA. There are even plans for a dunk tank, and Arnold was still waiting for confirmation that Hollister Mayor Eugenia Sanchez would volunteer to be in the tank at press time.

As always, the event will feature vendors selling arts and crafts items, as well as information booths for nonprofit organizations. There will be food booths, as well as a chance to eat at many of the downtown restaurants. And, of course, there will be free watermelon for all visitors to the festival.
