The San Benito County Superintendents held their second annual Celebration of School Attendance yesterday in front of Veteran’s Memorial Hall, designed to encourage kids to stay in school and celebrate learning.
“It’s a day when we invite any kid in school to come downtown, listen to some speakers and see what they can see,” said Superintendent of Schools Tim Foley.
For two hours nearly 200 students, parents and teachers played games and raffles were held for the students.
The event featured performances from the Rancho San Justo/Marguerite Maze Middle School band, the SBHS Band, the SBHS Dance Class and the SBHS Navy Junior ROTC.
The celebration also featured speakers including SBC Teacher of the Year Tami Ortiz.
Attendance is important not only to the students, but has serious financial implications as well. Assuming a high school student attended every class all 180 days school is in session, their school could receive $6,048.37 for that student each year– or about $33.60 every day.
“The funding is important, but most important is the fact that if they aren’t in class, we can’t do anything for them,” said SBHS Principal Debbie Padilla.
