For the seventh consecutive year, the Hollister Rotary Club will install smoke alarms or inspect existing alarms free of charge to seniors or disadvantaged residents.
The group is accepting requests for the Hollister Rotary Smoke Alarm Project, in which about 15 volunteers in groups of two will perform the work Saturday, March 22.
“It’s a pretty cheap insurance (from possible fires),” said the Rotary’s Mike Thompson.
Anyone living within the Hollister city limits is eligible for the free smoke detectors or inspections. Additionally, the volunteers hand out fire safety literature from the Hollister Fire Department, according to Thompson, who added that the literature includes advice on such issues as “keeping hot things away from flammables.”
“A lot of these people are disadvantaged,” Thompson said. “It’s really more for the elderly.”
He said many people who have responded in recent years are repeat customers. The Hollister Rotary also received referrals from area senior organizations such as Jovenes de Antano, he said.
