Balers Jose Castillo and Eddie Guzman finished in first and second place, respectively, on Monday in Hollister and led the San Benito High boys cross country team past visiting Palma, North Salinas and Everett Alvarez in a four-team dual meet.
Castillo clocked a 17:26 and Guzman a 17:28 to take the top two spots for San Benito, which defeated Palma 19-38, North Salinas 15-45 and Everett Alvarez 18-41.
“We did real well,” SBHS boys coach Jess Morales said. “We placed everyone in the top 10, so it was pretty good. The guys did a good job.”
Omar Vasquez was fifth overall for the Balers in 18:10; Sergio Alcala was sixth in 18:13; Ricky Esqueda was eighth in 18:25; and Said Hernandez rounded out the Balers in 10th at 18:36.
The Lady Balers, meanwhile, took two of three dual meets when they defeated North Salinas 15-45 and Everett Alvarez 16-43. Against Notre Dame, however, the Spirits upset San Benito 22-33.
Notre Dame’s Nina Anderson (20:07) and Natalie Sandoval (20:38) finished 1-2 in the girls race, just ahead of San Benito’s Rachel Shimabukuro.
Shimabukuro finished third in 20:54.
After Notre Dame took fourth place as well, Lady Baler Dayna Casillas was fifth in 21:22; Michelle Duarte was sixth in 21:26; Vanessa Estrada was ninth in 21:59; Jessica Cook was 10th in 22:29; and Amanda Hill was 12th in 22:46.
San Benito will not compete at the Mount Sac Invitational this weekend. Instead, the Balers will begin preparations for the Tri-County Athletic League Championships at Salinas’ Toro Park next Saturday, Oct. 31.
