Salinas – The San Benito girls placed first in every event and the boys took the top spot in all but one Friday as the Haybalers swam past Notre Dame and Palma at Hartnell College.

Shelli Reed, Lacey Larson, Katie Buzzetta and Demi Gatrell each were multiple winners as the girls beat Notre Dame 129-54.

Reed was first in the 200 individual medley at 2:14.81 and the 100 butterfly at 1:01.49. Larson won the 200 and 500 freestyle in 2:12.72 and 5:40.61, respectively.

Buzzetta paced the field in the 100 breaststroke at 1:16.82 and the 100 free at 57.29. Gatrell was the top finisher in the 50 free at 25.63 and the 100 backstroke at 1:06.63.

The ‘Balers took the first two spots in the 200 medley relay, with its top team finishing in 1:57.974. They won the 200 freestyle relay by nearly six seconds over Notre Dame and also grabbed the top two spots in the 400 freestyle relay.

Valerie Nicolayson scored a 136.05 on Thursday to win the diving competition.

In the boys competition, the ‘Balers were first in every event except the 100 breaststroke on their way to a 125-60 win over Palma.

Brandon Drogemuller, Dave Smith and James Schafer were all multiple winners.

Drogemuller won the 200 freestyle in 1:53.95 and the 500 freestyles in 5:03.78. Smith won the 100 butterfly in 54.06 and the 50 freestyle in 22.12.

Schafer had the top spot in the 100 back at 1:04.89 and the 100 freestyle in 53.13.

Blane Curtice took first in the 200 IM, winning in 2:08.02. He also took second in the 100 breaststroke with his time of 1:05.93, which placed him just behind Palma’s Alex Morris, who fnished in 1:05.25.

San Benito also swept the relay events. The ‘Balers time of 1:51.92 in the 200 medley relay edged Palma’s 1:52.01. They won the 200 freestyle relay by more than 10 seconds and the 400 freestyle relay by nearly 30 seconds.

Justin Andrade coasted in Thursday’s diving competition, winning with a score of 229.95, which was more than 100 points better than Palma’s top finisher.
