The San Benito girls volleyball team compiled a 2-3 record at the Spikefest tournament on Saturday, and missed the Bronze Division by a mere two points.

The Lady ‘Balers (4-7) won their opener against Independence in straight games, lost to Valley Christian in straight games, and went to a third game against Los Altos, but fell 16-14 in the third.

“If we had won that one, that would have put us in the Bronze Division, which is what our goal was,” coach Dean Askanas said. “We came out flat in the first game, like we still the bad mojo from the Valley Christian game.

“It was not a well played match, although we were only two points from making our goal.”

San Benito finished the tournament with a straight-game loss to Amador Valley and a straight-game win over Westmont.

Individual statistics and game scores were not available at press time.

Askanas said his team improved on their serve-receive, though, but “digging was down.”

“We’re getting a lot of good competition in,” he said. “Hopefully we’re getting used to playing a faster pace of ball so when league comes along, we’re ahead of the game.

“We just have to keep making improvements.”

The Lady ‘Balers will have their home opener Thursday at Mattson Gym against Aptos at 6:30 p.m. Aptos finished fourth at the Milpitas Spikefest.
