San Benito County supervisors approved a resolution at this week’s board meeting to extend Friday hours of operation at the San Benito County Free Library by four hours.

The new Friday hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Previously, Friday hours were 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., according to information included in the agenda. County documents attached to the extended meeting agenda state that the new hours are effective starting Sept. 1.

The library installed self-check machines within the last few months, resulting in more flexible staffing that allows for the extended hours.

The new Friday hours line up with Monday/Wednesday hours, which are also 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday/Thursday hours are still noon to 8 p.m.

The extension was approved as a consent agenda item. The item was not pulled for discussion and passed without opposition. The move by supervisors to extend hours is yet another step toward expanding library access in the county. Supervisors are also in the midst of considering plans for a new library at some point.
