Local resident Brittany Slaton was chosen Miss California Rodeo at the 99th annual Salinas rodeo.

San Benito High School students are eligible to compete for the title of Miss Salinas Valley Fair, according to a press release from the fairgrounds.
“Our ideal candidate is a young woman who loves the Salinas Valley Fair and wants to be an ambassador for the Salinas Valley at local events,” said T.J. Plew, the CEO of the Salinas Valley Fair, in the press release.
Entrants will be judged by personality (40%), a written test (25%), poise and appearance (20%), and horsemanship (15%). The 2016 Miss Salinas Valley Fair will receive a $2,000 scholarship, a sterling silver belt buckle and other prizes, according to the announcement. Each category winner also receives an award.
The competition is open to junior and senior high school girls who are students in school districts in the San Benito, Monterey, Santa Cruz, Southern Santa Clara, Northern San Luis Obispo, Parkfield and Coalinga counties.
Contestants must be at least 16 years old by Jan. 1 and no more than 19 years old by Dec. 31, according to the announcement. They can enter the contest more than once, but can only win one time. There is no entry fee.
Photographs taken at the event become the property of the Salinas Valley Fair and may be used for fair publicity, according to the announcement.
