San Juan Bautista City Councilman Chuck Geiger once again pulled the minutes off the consent agenda Tuesday over concerns about the accuracy of what he thought he had said at the previous meetings.
Geiger, pouring over page after page, wanted to change the wording in the minutes because he did not like they way he sounded when reading his words.
City Clerk Shawna Serna told Council members that she was following their direction.
Mayor Priscilla Hill ask Serna if she wrote the minutes as recorded on the tape, and she stated that she had.
“This is not correct,” Geiger said. “It’s not the way it should be stated.”
Hill told Geiger the clerk cannot change the wording just because he did not like what was written.
Councilman Dan Reed said if Geiger questioned the minutes, then he should listen to the tape, because Council could not change them without listening to the tape.
“She said she has verified this and you’re saying she didn’t,” said Reed.
Reed said at this point the Council did not know who to believe without listening to the tape, and Geiger said Council should not approve the minutes without reviewing the tape.
Resident Jim Pereyra defended the city clerk’s procedure in taking minutes, stating that he has pushed for a more accurate transcribing of details.
“I think she has done an outstanding job,” he said.
Resident and former council member Robert Quaid said the city was wasting time and money.
“I have never seen such a waste of city money and time,” he said.
The Council approved the minutes with minor corrections on a 4-0 vote. Geiger abstained.
In other news: Hill pulled the continuation of the review of the city manager’s contract off the action item because the city manager could not attend the meeting because of a death in the family.
